Physicians who supervise physician assistants are required to have a written agreement that defines the nature and extent of the supervision provided under new administrative rules that the Board will begin enforcing on January 1, 2018. The agreement, which must be in place prior to supervising a physician assistant, takes into account the skills and experiences of the physician assistant and the supervising physician and recognizes the existing elements of supervision established in current Iowa administrative rules.
The rules became effective September 20, but the Board will delay enforcement of the rule until January 1, 2018, to allow more time to implement the rulemaking, which was initiated on April 28, 2017. The Board pursued the rulemaking to provide more guidance to physicians who supervise physician assistants. The rulemaking clarifies existing supervisory requirements and establishes a written agreement to ensure that the supervisory requirements are discussed and understood by both the supervising physician and the physician assistant. While the supervisory agreement does not have to be approved by the Board, the supervising physician is expected to maintain a copy and provide it to the Board upon request.
To help implement the new rule, the Board is providing a sample agreement and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about supervisory agreements. They are available at the Board’s website, www.medicalboard.iowa.gov
In addition, Board staff is hosting a one-hour online interactive training activity about the supervisory agreement on several dates in October, November and December, and is available to make presentations around the state.
