Objective: Medicare and other major payors are creating incentives to move physicians toward electronic prescribing. Physicians not using e-prescribing by 2012 will incur significant Medicare penalties. Following this lecture, participants will be able to describe what constitutes successful e-prescribing and will have a better understanding of available e-prescribing systems.

                                                Kathy Schneider, Ph.D.
Objective: The Iowa e-Health Project is a collaborative effort to plan and promote the adoption and use of health information technology (health IT) in Iowa. Federal stimulus funding is available to improve collection of patient information through electronic health records (EHR) and facilitate date sharing through a statewide health information exchange (HIE). An explanation of the vision, goals and objectives for Iowa’s statewide plan for health information technology will be provided, with a discussion regarding the impact these efforts may have on Iowa practices. Participants will learn about plans for an electronic health information exchange (HIE) in Iowa, and have a greater understanding of how the Iowa eHealth Project aims to support Iowa physicians in moving toward meaningful EHR use and HIE.

Objective: Evidence mounts in support that oral disease can lead to poor overall health. Physicians must increase their role in oral disease prevention as guardians of Iowa’s health system. I-Smile is Iowa’s answer toward integrating oral health into a systematic approach that will help prevent dental disease in our most vulnerable population.

 Objective:  This presentation will discuss the importance of the ADA/EASD statement and the recent Iowa Diabetes Initiative Statement released for World Diabetes Day, November 2009.  The participants will review the treatment algorhythm, will discuss the primary care physician's role in the management of patients with Type 2 diabetes and conciser the role of incretin-based glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1) agonists.

Objective: Management of hyperglycemia in the ICU has become a controversial topic. A critical discussion of the modern intensive insulin therapy trials will be presented. Data will focus on critical research errors leading to the relaxation of glycemic goals and new evidence from our laboratory and ICU will be used to illustrate how tight glycemic control can be safely achieved.

Objective:  This presentation will give an overview of federal regulations related to Internet-based prescribing.  The presentation also highlights the most commonly abused controlled substances and looks at recent diversion trends.
